Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute
Meet the Physicians at Memorial Healthcare System's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Gary S. Allen, MD, FACS
Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery
In 2007, Dr. Allen, a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, was the 33rd surgeon in the world inducted into the "Beating Heart Hall of Fame.” This honor is given by Guidant Corporation to the top cardiac surgeons who demonstrate exemplary off-pump procedure technique.
The focus of Dr. Allen’s practice is minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Clinical research, graduate medical education and patient education are important facets of his practice outside the operating room.
Dr. Allen attended Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, where he received his medical degree. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Texas, Houston, where he took time out to complete a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship at the Artificial Heart Research Laboratory at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Dr. Allen’s research was funded through a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grant and he studied control apparatus for mechanical circulatory assist devices. He returned to the University of Utah where he completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Allen is credited for the implementation and overall success of the heart program at Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Florida. While at Osceola Regional, he served as Medical Director of the Heart Institute, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Chairman of the Critical Care Committee and Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
Dr. Allen has published extensively in peer reviewed journals in the cardiac surgery field during the past 10 years. He has been an invited lecturer on cardiothoracic surgery at numerous conferences and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Minimally-Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery and the American Heart Association Council on Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Allen was course director for CardioGenesis Thoracscopic TMR Training Program; Boston Scientific Maze Procedure Training Program and Medtronic’s Advanced Freestyle Aortic Valve Course. He served as the Community Board Chairman of the American Heart Association in 2006 and is still actively involved in the efforts to spread awareness of cardiac disease.
Other awards and professional achievements include the Outstanding Resident Teacher in the Department of Surgery, University of Texas; the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award in Continuing Education; and the Glaxo Wellcome Leadership and Achievement Awards from the American Medical Association.
