Family Birthplace

Memorial Regional Hospital’s maternity services include a wide selection of parenting and childbirth classes to help prepare you to have a healthy and satisfying pregnancy, labor, and delivery, and to provide confident care for your newborn.

A Blessing Shower

A special way to honor, prepare, support and love the mother and father to be. It is a "spiritual" perspective of mother, father, baby and birth (Not Religious). Activities include: Candle Lighting, Bead Necklace to wear in labor, Prayer Flags to use in delivery, umbilical cord ceremony and belly painting. To honor and respect Fathers-to-be we include a traditional Navajo foot washing with cornmeal. Each guest brings a trinket or bead with a hole for beading . Lunch fare served. Offered once a month.

Fee: $20 for Mom and 4 Guests and $5 for each additional guest. No limit. If the Grandmother cannot attend please bring something from her.

Baby Care

Addresses current information for expectant parents about basic baby care, crib safety, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome prevention, signs of illness, car seat safety, bonding pointers and characteristics of newborns. Expectations during newborn hospital stay are discussed. This class includes hands-on practice in bathing, dressing, diapering, feeding, burping, and holding a newborn.
Fee: $20 per couple

Baby Calming

This class is designed to teach expectant parents simple-to-learn “hands-on” techniques to quickly calm their babies’ cries. The class provides training and interactive demonstration on babywearing (a hands-free way to carry a baby), white noise, rocking and other effective baby-calming techniques.  Appropriate use and safety of baby wrapping is discussed. Normal newborn states of consciousness and newborn characteristics are addressed. Offered once a month.

Babysitting Basics

Teaches youth ages 11 through 15 skills for preparation to care for infants and children. Class includes CPR demonstration and hands on practice. Creating and managing a babysitting business is discussed. Parent must sign a permission form for the youth to participate and an adult must accompany child to class.
Fee: $20 per student

Boot Camp for New Dads

Helps prepare expectant dads for the responsibilities of fathering. Specially trained experienced "coaches" who are fathers themselves lead the class. This class should be taken prior to the birth of the baby. Fathers are invited to return as guests when their babies are about 2 months old to share experiences with rookie dads.
Fee: $20 per dad

Breastfeeding

Provides current information and tips to help make the early days of breastfeeding a positive experience for new mothers and their infants. Dads and grandparents are welcome and are encouraged to come.

Car Seat Safety

More than 85 percent of parents make mistakes when they install car seats. Parents must bring their own car and car seat for this car seat installation training session. Pregnant participants must be accompanied by a non-pregnant person. Call (954) 265-2350 one month in advance for an appointment time at Memorial Regional Hospital.

Cesarean Birth

Provides information for parents-to-be about cesarean section childbirth. Includes information on when a cesarean birth is indicated, anesthesia used, and what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Information on post surgery care and recovery included. This class is appropriate for anyone who is having a repeat cesarean birth or for a first-time mother who expects to have cesarean birth. A maternity orientation and tour is included.

Childbirth Preparation

Provides current information about pregnancy, labor and postpartum recovery. Includes relaxation methods, comfort measures and breathing techniques to help prepare you for labor. Information about epidurals, medications, episiotomies and cesarean sections also is included to help you make informed childbirth choices.

Childbirth Preparation Refresher

For couples who took a childbirth preparation class for a previous pregnancy. The class includes updates and practice on breathing techniques and comfort measures.

Grandparents Class

Discusses the special contribution grandparents make in the lives of their grandchildren. Includes how things have changed since their own children were born and provides information about childbirth, baby care and baby safety. Class includes infant CPR demonstration and hands on practice. Grandparents are encouraged to share their stories and concerns.
Fee: $20 per couple

Healthy Pregnancy

Promotes a safe, healthy and comfortable pregnancy. Various topics are discussed including comfort measures for pregnancy, expected progression of pregnancy, methods for preventing preterm labor and danger signs. Expectant mothers and their partners are encouraged to take this class as early in the pregnancy as possible or during the preconception period (before pregnancy). A maternity orientation and tour is included.

Infant/Child Safety and CPR

This class is designed for parents, family members and others who care for infants and children age 8 and younger. The class follows American Heart Association CPR guidelines, and includes a variety of measures to help create a safe environment.

Infant Massage

Demonstrates techniques for infant massage and emphasizes the importance of touch in development. The class is for parents of healthy babies 4 weeks old to pre-crawling stage. Please bring your baby to class. Massage oil and textbook included.

Mommy and Me Baby Cakes Tea Party

A local, informal group gathering of like-minded new moms and their babies which offers support, friendship, activities and parenting tips. With guest speakers on topics of interest as well as "mom led" discussion, it is fun and informative for moms and babies! Held once a month at the Joe DiMaggio Family Resource Center, 1005 Joe DiMaggio Drive (N 35 Ave), Hollywood Florida 33021.

An ongoing support group to provide breastfeeding assistance and encouragement from other moms and our board-certified lactation consultants. Nursing babies are welcome.

Parenting Counts Program

The parent-child relationship is one of the most essential factors in a child's overall development. In this program expectant parents learn successful parenting through four pillars of development: Physical and brain development, Social and Emotional Development, and Communication and Language Development.

Prenatal Infant Massage Class

This class is designed to be taken before the baby's birth for parents to learn the simple, important strokes of Infant Massage for baby calming, attachment, and infant development. Dolls are used and a booklet is included.

Siblings Class

Engage children ages 3 to 8 to prepare for the arrival of a baby in the family. A variety of stimulating activities are introduced to help children understand their roles of being a big brother or big sister. Includes a trip to the nursery. Participants are encouraged to bring a doll or stuffed animal for each child.

Parenting and childbirth classes through the Family Birthplace at Memorial Regional Hospital are free or have a nominal fee. Our goal is to provide accurate, up-to-date information to the community about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting.
