Sickle Cell Day Hospital
Memorial Sickle Cell Day Hospital at Memorial Regional Hospital is a leader in sickle cell pain treatment for patients 16 years and older. It also is the first program of its kind in the nation to receive “Disease-Specific Certification” from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
The Sickle Cell Day Hospital assists patients in the management of their condition to avoid acute, painful crises and other complications of sickle cell syndromes. Before pain becomes a problem, patients can call the Admitting Nurse — available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — to arrange for medical help.
A dedicated staff of expert physicians, nurses and support personnel works closely with the patient’s primary care physician or with a primary care physician at the Day Hospital to deliver appropriate treatment. For patients who do not have a physician for comprehensive care, our hematologists are available for assistance. In addition, the staff provides immunizations for sickle cell patients, instruction on effective pain management techniques and ongoing support.
The benefits of a dedicated Sickle Cell Day Hospital include:
- Prompt, aggressive treatment for acute pain crises
- Treatment delivery in an average of five hours, with the added benefit of avoiding or reducing hospital admission
- Support and expertise of a highly knowledgeable staff
- Reduced need for hospitalization and fewer visits to the Emergency Department
- Care in a quiet, comfortable setting
- A transition program for adolescents to progress into adult care
- Reduced cost of care
- Support and advocacy groups
